How do I? and Field Help

The following fields and check boxes appear in the Share Draft section on the Shares tab:

Field/Check Box Description
Supported If selected, share draft processing is supported by the credit union. The 450 Report is generated during share draft processing. (Portico Host: 902 Transaction - SUPPORT field)
Returns/Return Code

If selected, the system will automatically transmit the specified share draft return items to the share draft processor through File Exchange (XROADS). If your credit union does not transmit returns through File Exchange (XROADS), selecting this check box will allow you to charge return fees and produce notices using the Share Draft Exception Items window.

(Portico Host: 902 Transaction - RETURNS field)

Indicates the default return or a non-return code that will appear in the Return Code field on the Share Draft Exception Items window. The return code indicates to the item processor the reason you are returning the share draft. The non-return code generates fees and notices on a share draft that the system does not return. The valid return codes are:

Blank - Do not return. The system will not return the draft, assess a fee, or produce a notice. System default.

08 - Uncollected funds

11 - Insufficient funds. The item processor will not resend the draft.

12 - Restraining order

13 - Garnished account

27 - Fraudulent Funds

35 - Forged Signature

51 - Insufficient funds

54 - Stop pay

55 - No account at credit union

56 - Closed account

58 - Referred to maker (Not valid for Travelers. Southwest Corp users must use code 08 for uncollected funds.)

59 - Request one photocopy (Chase and California Travelers)

60 - Advance notice stop pay (California Travelers) or fraud/forgery item (Southwest Corp)

The valid non-return codes are:

80 - Statement Message is FEE NEGATIVE DRAFT. The online history code is RN.

81 - Statement Message is FEE UNCOLLECTED FUNDS, followed by the share draft serial number. The online history code is UF.

82 - Statement Message is FEE MISC NON-RETURN, followed by the share draft serial number. The online history code is MI.

83 - Statement Message is FEE COURTSY PAY, followed by the share draft serial number. The online history code is NC.

The system-defined statement messages can be changed by using the Notice Messages window and message detail E.

When processing the entire exception items file on the Share Draft Exception Items window, Portico will use the return/non-return code defined in the Return Code field on the Credit Union Profile – Shares tab as the default return code with the following exceptions:

  • Courtesy Pay Exception Codes CP, CO, CU, and CA will default to courtesy pay non-return code 83.
  • AM Cycle Exception Code A3 will default to the code defined in the Repost/Return Code field on the Credit Union Profile – Shares tab.

Stop Payments If selected, the credit union uses the Share Draft Stop Pays dialog box. The weekly 449 Report lists additions, deletions, and purges to the stop pay file. (Portico Host: 902 Transaction - STOP field)
Fees No longer used. (Portico Host: 902 Transaction - FEES field)
Allow Negative Balance Posting

If selected, share draft accounts are allowed to fall below a zero balance. The system checks this field when posting drafts. All share draft items will post regardless of the share draft balance. No balance limit can be specified. To specify a negative balance limit, use the Courtesy Pay share draft posting option. This check box cannot be selected, if the Supported check box is selected in the Uncollected Funds section or the Processing Option field is Y or X in the Courtesy Pay section.

(Portico Host: 902 Transaction - NEG BAL field)

Mod 10 Ck Digit

If selected, Mod 10 is used when calculating the share draft ID check digit on the Shares - Draft Info tab.

To determine the check digit for a specific draft ID, Portico will multiply every digit of the share draft ID by 1 or 2, beginning with a 1 under the first digit of the draft ID. The draft ID will be 10 or 16 digits long (not counting the to-be-determined" check digit). If the draft ID is less than 10 or 16 digits, the remaining spaces will be filled with zeroes. In this example, the draft is 8675309 and the credit union has chosen to use 10 digit draft IDs so the remaining spaces will be filled with zeroes.

0 0 0 8 6 7 5 3 0 9
1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2
0+ 0+ 0+ 1+6+ 6+ 1+4+ 5+ 6+ 0+ 1+8 = 38

If the product of the multiplied numbers is a two digit number, Portico will add the two digits together with the rest of the digits. For example, 9 x 2 = 18, add 1 + 8 to equal 9.

If a value does not exist in the Ck Digit Constant field... Portico will add the resulting digits, and take the difference between the sum of the above calculation and the next highest multiple of ten. This will result in the check digit assigned to the share draft account. For example, 40 - 38 = 2. The share draft ID will be 86753092.

If a value does exist in the Ck Digit Constant field... Portico will add the check digit constant to the total digits. For example, 38 + 11 = 49. Then, take the difference between the sum and the next highest multiple of ten. For example, 50- 49 = 1. This will result in the check digit assigned to the share draft account. The share draft ID will be 86753091.

(Portico Host: 902 Transaction - MOD 10 field)

Uses 17 Digit Draft IDs

If selected, your credit union may enter share and loan draft IDs up to 17 digits long. If not selected, the standard draft ID length of up to 11 digits will be used. The system default is not selected. (Portico Host: 902 Transaction - 17 DIGIT DFT ID field)

Reporting Analytics: SD Expanded ID Ind (All Header Processing Rules subject in the Credit Union Rules\All Credit Union Rules folder)

Ck Digit Constant

The constant used in the Mod 10 share draft check digit calculation. The check digit constant is optional. You can use the Mod 10 share draft check digit calculation with or without a check digit constant. The constant is derived from the bank CUID.

To determine the check digit to be used in the Mod 10 calculation, multiply each digit of the bank CUID by 1 or 2, beginning with a 2 under the first digit of the bank CUID. For example, CUID 12345.

1 2 3 4 5
2 1 2 1 2
2+ 2+ 6+ 4+ 1+0 = 11

If the product of the multiplied numbers is a two digit number, add the two digits together with the rest of the digits. For example, 5 x 2 = 10, add 1 + 0 to equal 1. The constant derived from the bank CUID (in this example, 11) should be entered in the Ck Digit Constant field.

Flat Fee Example: For a flat fee, enter the fee amount in the Fee Tier 1 field, and leave 0.00 in the Fee Tier 2 and Fee Tier 3 fields. In the Beginning Balance Tier 1 field, enter the maximum positive amount allowed and in the Beginning Balance Tier 2 field, enter the maximum negative amount allowed. Regardless of the member’s available balance, the flat fee amount in the Fee Tier 1 field is assessed.

  • If a debit item posts and the resulting available balance is -10.00 and the Fee check box is selected, the fee amount in the Fee Tier 1 column is assessed.
  • If a credit item posts and the resulting available balance is +100.00 and the Fee check box is selected, the fee amount in the Fee Tier 1 column is assessed. To avoid assessing a fee on a credit item, the Fee check box must be unchecked.

Flat Fee Example

Tiered Fee Example: When an item is paid, Portico will calculate the available balance after posting the item and use this balance to determine which fee tier to use. In the following example, the Beginning Balance Tier 1 field is negative .01. If the resulting available balance after posting is positive, no fee is assessed for the share draft or ACH item; thus, credit items will not be charged a fee by accident.

Tiered Fee Example

In this example, the Beginning Balance Tier 1 field is -.01, the Beginning Balance Tier 2 field is -300.00 and the Beginning Balance Tier 3 field is -500.00.

  • If an item posts and the resulting available balance is between negative .01 and negative 299.99, the fee amount in the Fee Tier 1 column ($5.00) is assessed if the Fee check box is selected.
  • If an item posts and the resulting available balance is equal to or more negative than negative 300.00 but less than negative 499.99, the fee amount in the Fee Tier 2 column is assessed if the Fee check box is selected.
  • If an item posts and the resulting available balance is equal to or more negative than negative 500.00, the fee amount in the Fee Tier 3 column is assessed if the Fee check box is selected.

Balances must be defined in descending order. For example, if the Beginning Balance Tier 1 field is a positive amount (e.g. 10.00), the Beginning Balance Tier 2 field must be less positive (e.g. 5.00) or a negative amount (e.g. - 0.01), and the Beginning Balance Tier 3 field must be less positive (e.g. 2.00) or more negative (e.g. - 1.00) than the Tier 2 amount. Fees may be defined in ascending or descending order, or may be defined the same for all categories.

Available for both share draft and ACH processing, the tiered non-return fee table will only apply to those items that are rejected as an exception item in the back-office cycle. This includes items paid in the back-office cycle with the following exception codes:

Share Draft exceptions paid in the back-office cycle:

  • A2 - Cleared uncollected
  • A3 - Repost-draft posted in the AM pass of the back-office cycle
  • A4 - Draft was paid by bringing members account negative
  • A5 - Cleared with overdraft protection funds
  • CP - Cleared with courtesy pay funds
  • CO - Combination of overdraft protection and courtesy pay
  • CU - Combination of uncollected and courtesy pay
  • CA - Combination of overdraft protection, uncollected and courtesy pay

ACH exceptions posted in the back-office cycle, but referred to the ACH Exception Items window due to processing options or ACH table post options:

  • EA2 - Cleared with uncollected funds
  • EA5 - Cleared with combination of overdraft protection and uncollected funds
  • ECP - Cleared with courtesy pay funds
  • ECO - Cleared with combination of overdraft protection and courtesy pay
  • ECU - Cleared with combination of courtesy pay and uncollected funds

  • E1C - Cleared with ACH table set to force post into negative
  • E1D - Cleared with ACH table set to post to zero balance
  • E1E - Cleared with ACH table set to post below share type minimum required balance

EFT items will continue to post online at time of settlement and will not use the tiered fee table. If you allow EFT items to consider courtesy pay at the time of authorization, and the item is paid with courtesy pay funds, then the current fee amount defined on the EFT Processing Rules - ATM/Debit Processing Rules tab will be assessed regardless of the available balance. EFT NSF items that are approved in an offline mode using the credit union-defined offline limits will continue to be assessed the flat NSF fee amount defined specifically for EFT NSF items.

In support of the 2005 Joint Guidance on Overdraft Protection Program, you can define the first tier as a grace balance amount with a fee of .00, allowing your credit union to waive a fee for transactions that overdraw an account by a de minimus (small) amount, as stated in the guidelines.
