Exception Codes
The Exception Code field specifies the exception code assigned in the Portico back-office cycle that explains why the item was rejected or a paid exception. The valid options are:
01 - Missing member
02 - Insufficient share draft funds
03 - Missing/invalid share account
04 - Insufficient share balance for transfer
05 - Missing/invalid/delinquent loan. If the Add Interest Due to Loan Balance check box is selected on the Loan Profiles - Account Information tab, indicates no overdrafting (Portico Host: 962 Transaction - INTEREST field).
06 - Loan is over credit limit/draw per expired
07 - Share or loan not set up with draft ID
08 - Maximum of drafts exceeded this period
09 - No overdraft increment for this share type
10 - Missing/invalid overdraft share account
11 - Closed account, hold code 9 with date closed
12 - Funds held, hold codes 1 – 8 and 9 no date closed
13 - Member HSA segment not found
14 - HSA maximum contribution limit reached
15 - Invalid draft transaction code
17 - Member is dormant
21 - Non-numeric draft serial number
22 - Invalid date processed from bank
23 - Invalid date adjusted from bank
24 - Non-numeric draft amount
25 - Date adjusted prior to date processed
26 - Adjustment txn not sent in pairs
27 - Draft amount lower than minimum draft amount
28 - Numeric hold/deposited to low share *
29 - Maximum Reg D transactions exceeded
43 - Non-numeric draft trace number
54 - Invalid loan frequency
58 - Invalid interest paid to date
5H - Invalid loan due date
61 - Invalid share dividend method
62 - Invalid daily dividend date
63 - Invalid effective date
64 - Invalid avg daily bal for inquiry date
65 - Invalid avg daily bal fee date
98 - Draft matches online stop pay record or verbal stop pay
99 - Draft matches online certified record
A1 - The draft reject was added online using the New Return Item window.
A2 - The draft was paid against uncollected funds.
A3 - The draft posted in the AM pass of the back-office cycle.
A4 - The draft was paid by bringing the member's balance negative.
A5 -The draft was paid using a partial overdraft and uncollected funds.
A7 - The draft non-return was added online using the New Return Item window.
CP - The draft was paid against courtesy pay negative balance limit.
CO - The draft was paid using a combination of overdraft protection funds and courtesy pay negative balance limit.
CU - The draft was paid using a combination of uncollected funds and courtesy pay negative balance limit.
CA - The draft was paid using a combination of overdraft protection funds, uncollected funds, and courtesy pay negative balance limit.
FZ - The member account is frozen
OA - Overflow account balance
OI - Overflow loan interest
OU - Overflow avg daily balance fee
OV - Overflow avg daily balance inquiry
OX - Overflow dividend
When using the default return codes, the system will default the return code based on the exception code:
- If the exception code is 98 or 99, the return code will be 54.
- If the exception code is A1, the return code will be the return code from New Return Item window.
- If the exception code is A2 or A5, the return code will be 81.
- If the exception code is A3, the return code will be the code in the Return Code field in the Share Draft section on the Credit Union Profile - Shares tab.
- If the exception code is CP, CO, CU, or CA, the return code will be 83.
- If the exception code is everything else, the return code will be the code in the Return Code field in the Share Draft section on the Credit Union Profile - Shares tab.
Return Codes
Enter a return or non-return code in the Return Codes field. You can specify a default return or non-return code in the Return Code field in the Share Draft section on the Credit Union Profile - Shares tab (Portico Host: 902 Transaction - RTN CDE field). The valid options are:
Return Codes:
- 08 - Uncollected funds
- 11 - Insufficient funds. The item processor will not resend the draft.
- 12 - Restraining order
- 13 - Garnished account
- 27 - Fraudulent Item (Verify code is supported by share draft processor before returning item)
- 35 - Forged Signature (Verify code is supported by share draft processor before returning item)
- 51 - Insufficient funds
- 54 - Stop pay
- 55 - No account at credit union
- 56 - Closed account
- 58 - Referred to maker (Not valid for Travelers. Southwest Corp users must use code 08 for uncollected funds.)
- 59 - Request one photocopy (Chase and California Travelers)
- 60 - Advance notice stop pay (California Travelers) or fraud/forgery item (Southwest Corp)
The return code descriptions may be customized by your credit union using the Draft Return Exception Codes – List window, and may appear differently than in the online help and user documentation.
Non-Return Codes:
- 80 - Statement Message is FEE NEG DFT. The online history code is RN.
- 81 - Statement Message is FEE UNCOL FUNDS, followed by the share draft serial number. The online history code is UF.
- 82 - Statement Message is FEE MISC NON-RETURN, followed by the share draft serial number. The online history code is MI.
- 83 - Statement Message is FEE COURTSY PAY, followed by the share draft serial number. The online history code is NC.
